Doc Shenley...
I've been searching the Ancestry 1861 census without success for Richard Lea
(c.1860) and his family. In 1851 (HO 107/2199 f36 p945) his parents William
and Isabela are living alone. In 1871 (RG10/3887 f? p10) Richard is with
his parents, an older brother Robert and younger sibs. Twenty years apart
they are living at different addresses, but all are born and living in the
Wigan area.

In 1861, Richard should be part of a family of four.

C Rihan...
There are 6 hits for Richard Lea, age 1 + or - !
on the 1861 census at the 1837online.com site, if that's any help,
and 13 results for Isabella Lea.

I gather that searching for babies on Ancestry can cause problems
because if the age is given in months, then it has been treated as
years. So if you were looking for Richard with an age of about 1 year,
it may be that he was 11 months old, but indexed as being 11 years
old.

Best wishes
C.Rihan

I have done searches in England and Wales on Lea, Lee, Leigh, Ley, Lay and
Leah. I've also tried changing the initial letter to S, I and J. I'm out
of ideas and wondered what else I could try. I'd be grateful for any
suggestions.

Charani...
OK, something to amuse you :))

You found that one for Doc Shenley but can you find Louisa (b 1853

Steven Gibbs...
Oh no he didn't. Lots of verbiage, but only what Doc already knew.

Charani...
Should have guessed

Bath, Somerset) and Elizabeth (or Eliza) HELPS (b 1858 Bristol) in the
1861?? :))

They should be with their parents and possibly other siblings but I
can't find them. In 1881 Louisa and Elizabeth are living at 2 Philip
Street, Bristol Temple. In 1891 Elizabeth (now calling herself Eliza)
is lodging with her son, Henry, at 11 West Street, Bedminster. In
1901 they are at 12 Ayers Square, Bristol.

I don't have access to the 1871 so I don't know where they are then.

Steven Gibbs...
This looks like them in 1871, but Elizabeth is called Mary

and on that basis, 1861 gives ...

Note that Elizabeth/Mary is now Jane. Hmmm.

Of course, this may not be them at all, but there are no other obvious
candidates.

Charani...
Thank you *very* much for that, you're a real gem :))

I'm not sure why Elizabeth/Eliza becomes Mary either but the change to
Jane isn't too surprising. Elizabeth had a middle name - Jane.

HELPS is a reasonably unusual name so given that the address is the
same and the mother and one dau are the same, it's very likely the
same family.

A few more certificates to go on my Xmas list too ;))

Doc Shenley...
Thanks Hugh. Your 1851 and 1871 search confirms mine. You also turned up
the Westons who are on a separate page. I had missed that, and it might be
a clue to Isabela's family name.

Your 1861 record for Leigh looks a bit unlikely. Thanks for trying. Before
I finally give up on this, it would be good to get more confirmation that
the Leas were left out in 1861. Are there other ways to do this?

pilgrimsprogress...
With this marvellous help in finding this family, I wonder if anyone can
help me at all please, I've tried every way I can think of to locate the
following one. There appears to be a multitude of ways to spell the surname
as well as the forename.

My problem line is (Nathaniel) Josiah PINNEGAR b1823 Stonehouse, Glos, with
first wife Mary b1813 Plumpton, Cumberland. Children that may, or may not
be with them are Joseph b1846 Kendal, Westmorland Mary Ann b1850 Shifnal,
Shropshire & Edward b1855 Ulverstone, Lancs. There maybe other children
between Mary Ann & Edward, and this is what I am particularly trying to
establish. Josiah, as he is normally known was a railway labourer, and as
can be seen from the family of his second marriage in 1864, he moved around
a lot.

He was close to home in 1851, being in Gloucester. With his second wife and
family in Bleatarn, Westmorland, in 1871.

There is also another Josiah PINNEGAR b1820 Kings Stanley, Glos, that I'm
hunting, married to Sarah bc1821 Greenwich, who should be in Greenwich, as
they stayed put in the area, missing from 1861 & also 1871

Hope someone can manage the impossible with this lot, so I've got my fingers
crossed.
