George Orwell...
The husband died in 1894. The wife was granted letters of
adminstration. The personal estate was £302. I have the
following questions (which I hope someone can answer)
(a) why apply for letters of adminstration in the first place?

Charani...
Because there was no will. It's standard procedure.

Eve McLaughlin...
because the husband had money to leavce, and you cannot just take it,
without authority. The probate court has to grant the right to the
correct person (next of kin usually) to take possession and hand out the
dosh, according to a set pattern.

(b) Does "personal estate" include the house or other property.

Charani...
No, personal is personal, clothes, furnishings and that sort of thing.
House and other property is real estate.

Eve McLaughlin...
No real estate - (house land etc, held freehold or copyhold). Leases
are wasting assets, so count as part of personal estate. Real estate in
1804 would all go to the eldest somn, the personal esttae be divided
between other close kin (wife, other children, or parent/s or siblings,
depending on who surivived hom)

(c) What would £302 be worth in to-day's prices?

Charani...
Can't answer that one, sorry.

CWatters...
£ 22,275.16 according to ..

Eve McLaughlin...
not really enough, in purchasing power.

Eve McLaughlin...
Diddfcult, since there is no straight and simple answer. You could buy
a decent sized house with it, so say £350.000, today's equivalent. Of
you could live comfortably. for a couple of years. Ag labs were paid
about 7s 6d a week (inflated wages for wartime)/

OK. Chris. What's the answer to your question?

Chris Dickinson...
No idea.

How about a thread of just asking questions?
