On Who Do You Think You ARE?, Sheila Hancock took a photo of an ancestor
to (I think) the British Museum where an expert dated the photo by
reference to the clothing and hairstyle of the subject.

Is this the sort of service which might be available at any city museum
and if so, is it available to non-celebs who don't have BBC funding at
their disposal?

Actually it was Sotheby's. I'm sure they charge for such consultations
when they don't get them a mention on TV.

In my experience just turning up at the V&A and asking has
got me results.

The other good source I've found on personal visits is the
Fashion Museum in Bath.
