GRO policy?

Ruth Wilson...
I don't often get certificates from the GRO these days, but I did send for
three last week, which arrived today. Two are exactly as requested and
expected. The third however is incorrect. I've just been on to FreeBMD and
double checked the details in case I'd made some error when ordering. It is
quite clear from entering only Quarter, district, page and vol that I have
been sent the 'other' marriage on the page, not the one requested (with
completely different surnames, no possibly misreading etc!). Fair enough,
simple mistake, it's happened before (not from GRO).

Eve McLaughlin...
But do you mean you sent for a marriage certificate without mentioning
at least one of the name expected to be thereon, which you must have
known since this is the way on which you look up a registration
reference? If so, erm, did you expect the officials to be psychic and
work out which of the two certificates on the page you required.
If you DID actually name the couple, or at least the male name and
surname, involved, then you are entitled to a free replacement. If not,
not.

Ruth Wilson...
No, I'm not quite that dippy yet!! I sent for certificate with both names,
quarter, vol, page, etc. It is clear that it was a straightforward error on
GRO part that sent me the 'other' marriage on that page. I was just curious
that they had sent the invoice bit to me with that certificate, not the
others, wondering if this indicated a problem, although they didn't specify
one. (like they used to write on the back 'father's name not William' or
whatever.

Cock-up, not conspiracy ...

For this incorrect certificate, though, there is a green form with my order
details on included in the envelope, but not for either of the other two.
Any ideas why this has happened, or is there no significance attached to it?
Just curious.

Off now to send angry email (grrrr - this certificate just *might* solve the
mystery of the non-existent gt grandma in law ....)
