I have a family Bible handed down from my great great grandfather. I am
caroline.bradford...
|
Put the family bible to one side for the moment. Some or all of the
information in it may be correct, but it's also possible that some or all of
it is guesswork.
Start from what you know and work backwards, step by step. If you don't
have your parents' marriage certificate, then buy a copy (even if you "know"
what was on it). Then try for your father's birth certificate which will
give you his mother's maiden name. Then you are ready to search for your
grandparent's marriage, and so on and so on.
Happy hunting!

trying to trace the family history. Not just names but more occupations and
other stuff as I have a general interest in social history.
My grandfather was name Chattin. Its an unusual(ish) name. According to my
family oral tradition they all lievd in a stones throw of Dudley ( netherton
, cradley area) all their lives. My grand father was a Canal boatman. I
believe his father was too and his father before him.
My grandfather was William. His father was John and his father was
Issachia. William married Ethel. John married Jane . Issachia married
Susannah.
Except that is when it comes to the census apparently where they do not seem
to exist. There is a Chatten and I might be tempted to go with Chatten if it
were not for the fact John's dad is another John ( not Issachia) and his mum
is Sarah ( not Susannah). There is a brother listed as Henry with a family -
butnone of the family members match my names in my Bible.

Isker is Issachiah? Age is about right.
Thankyou. I do not live in the Midlands. Dont know the area I am looking at.

I think this could be them in 1881 census (from Familysearch)
at 49 Windmill End, Dudley, Worcester (Rg11 2882 f 64 p 12)
Hezekiah CHATTIN Head age 25 General Labourer
with wife Sushannah age 25, and son William age 1
(all born Dudley)
It's spelt a different way but similar pronounciation.
Best wishes

I have a dilemma either the census online is a bit iffy or my family didnt
know their own names and couldnt spell the family surname. This is a big
john...
|
Spelling is both down to the informant and the census enumerator knowing
how to spell what they may have heard. And then the person doing the
transcription has to interpret the writing..... Wild card searching is
often necessary.
|
problem since I have names my Son ( carrying the Chattin name) Isaac ( after
Issachia - well Issachia was a bit much but the name goes on) and wanted him
to have a full list of names in that Bible.
Is the census often wrong? How can you proceed when you cannot be sure.
Original birth certs are unavailable. John died in WW1 as did Henry.
William was 12 and he and family moved in with grandma. All certs seem to
have gone missing.
I have a similar problem with the other side of my family. A channel Is.
name. Again , they dont exist unless there is a real mis spelling - Le
Tusler ( Letissier?) is a possible, but how do I know?
How do I know I have the right families?

What is your problem with that family? A clear, succinct note of the
full information (names/dates/places/etc) you have may allow someone to
help you.

Cant find any Le Tissiers in Plymouth in . I can find a Le Tulser family.
Mabel . Her father would have been John and mother possibly a Cornish woman
named Bessie. ( Elisabeth?) I need something to track Bessie's maiden name
( possible Francis ) to her place of Birth. People say she and John are
Channel Is. ( Guernsey). One result I have puts her as Cornish if she is the
Tulser in the 1901 census.
But to confirm that I need to get details. Half her children were born
in Cornwall. Others in Plymouth. Large family.

As I said, but which you ignored, a clear, succinct note of the full
information (all names/dates/places/etc) you have may allow someone to
help you.
You mentioned "Cant find any Le Tissiers in Plymouth in ." when, who....
You mentioned children.......(names/dates/places/etc)
What information do you have?
|
We now live in Cornwall. It would be nice to visit this ladies birth place.
Did it for John Chattin. Got the pictures. I am also trying to list the
various addresses.
I want a history book for my boy showing him who was who and from where.

Probably them
Marriages Dec 1873
Frances Bessie Stoke D 5b 635
Le Tissier John Stoke Damerel 5b 635
Buy the certificate and you should find her father and hopefully DoB

That would figure. Being highly original this lot , they nearly all have
either Elizabeth ( Betty) as a middle name for a girl and Francis as a
middle name for a boy. Funnily enough they were all baptised at Stoke
Damerel Church too. I'll get the certificate and see where she came from.
I have two pictures ( oil paintings) hanging above my head. They belonged to
the daughter Clara I am told ( we think)

Plenty of other Francis family members in Roche in 1861 and 1871 but no
(obvious) Bessie born around 1853-1855
confusedcom...
|
I found her in Cornish parish records ( go to history of Roche and online
records local families.)
Bessie Francis is listed and dof b abt 1855 . St. Erme. Father John and
mother Jane ( from Enador) . He was a farmer . lists him as having 25
acres - so hardly a big farm. She worked on the farm in 1871. that figures
well too. Oral history has it she knew how to work a dairy and knew about
cows. Set one of her daughters up in the dairy business.
