I've never seen this relationship listed on a census before - at least,
not like this.
Peter Goodey...
|
When I was a census enumerator once (and once was enough), one couple put
their relationship down as "just good friends" which they rather sheepishly
pointed out to me when I collected the form. I just grinned. Perhaps in
2071 or whenever, someone will agonise over precisely what that meant.

Are you able to reveal which census this appears in? And do they
appear in others with the same description or did they eventually
marry?
Steven Gibbs...
|
This is 1851. James doesn't appear in later censuses, and I can't find
Charlotte in 1861.

I note he was 10 years younger than her. In modern parlance he might
have been described as her toy boy. I suppose it was what you might
call a consensu-al relationship - OUCH!

(Hoping I haven't misread it!)

I love the 'domestic and other duties'. Is this in a small village? Perhaps
the enumerator was an ex-husband or jilted lover.
Steven Gibbs...
|
This particular enumerator usually gave the occupation of a wife as
"domestic duties", but this is the only one I've noticed where "and
other" has crept in.
Some while back, I found a wife with the occupation "Domestic affairs".
That left me wondering ...

If you haven't misread it shouldn't Mr Jeffs occupation have been
given as "Toy Boy"?

Looks like fancy woman to me with "domestic and other duties" as
occupation

That's how I read it as well. It's a wonder the entry wasn't
corrected to "housekeeper" with "domestic duties".

Great:
Do you have the full TNA reference to this?
Peter Goodey...
|
The full TNA reference means the department code and series number (eg RG
9) plus piece number (eg RG 9/1234) plus folio number plus some means of
identifying which side of the sheet we're talking about (eg the page
number).
