SJP...
I've just tracked down another relative and the marriage certificate arrived
today :-)

Hugh Watkins...
date of marriage please

If anybody has access to the 1861 census for Devonport area could they try
and locate Emma Jane Stephens born approx 1852 and Father should be Robert
Stephens?

Hugh Watkins...
and what occupation on the certificate?

Hugh W

SJP...
Date of marriage was 6th Dec 1870 at St Pauls Church in the Parish of St
Pauls Devenport between
William Frank James age 21 (Bachelor) Seaman RN. Father William James
(Shipwright) and
Emma Jane Stephens age 18 (spinster) no occupation. Father Robert Stephens
(Pensioner)

Hugh Watkins...
Robert Stephens should be in naval pension records
and in crew lists at Kew too

in census possibly under vessels if at sea (many pages of RN 1881 are
damaged or lost)

ages at marriage are notoriously adjustable
do you have a full census entry for say 1901 please post it

if not post what you know about the two families
say 1891 1901

or 1881

mike...
This is the only reference that matches for Emma Stephens with father named
Robert and with
a birth year that also fits, there are some other Emma Jane in the same area
but father not Robert.

The reference is from the 1861 census per Ancestry.com

Will J...
No obvious matches on Ancestry- do you have a birthplace for Emma?

Will J...
Hmm I spoke too soon - there is an Emma J aged 8 in Stoke Damerel, mother
Mary A, sailor's wife aged 44 and sister Elizabeth L aged 12 all born Moira
Town?

Charani...
It's possible that she was illegitimate and made up a father's name
for the sake of appearances.

Jeff...
Will's find seemed likely but that family turns up again in 1871 with
the father William, Petty Officer, Royal Navy.

Will J...
Ah, then Mike's is probably the right one in St. Germans?

Better that than Illegitimate which one poor girl had had written
across her marriage certificate under her father's name and occupation
in large letters by an obviously disapproving incumbent. I've not
come across that before.
