David...
I have been searching for the marriage of my Great Grandfather and
finally found it. Unfortunately I found two records so to eliminate
one of them I sent off for both certificates. Having now received them
it would appear that he got married twice to the same person about
three months apart. Details of certs are as follows:- Cert 1. Date
24/06/1865 between William Butler and Susan Sutton both ages stated as
full. His condition is Batchelor hers is Spinster. His occupation is
Driver RA (Royal Artillery hers is not stated. Both are residing in
Plumstead. William's father is Edward Butler and Susan's is John
Sutton both father's profession is labourer. Witnesses are H Thomas
and Sarah Sutton. Cert 2. Date 02/09/1865 all details are identical to
cert 1 except residence details. William was in military barracks and
Susan was in Wellington Street. Witnesses to this marriage are G G
Gray and E Young. Marriage 1 was in Plumstead and Marriage 2 was in
Woolwich.

Has anyone any ideas how this can happen, I would love to know.

Only if you believe the IGI entries which give the impression of
double marriages because of banns entries being indexed as marriages
or of marriages of couples from different parishes being listed in
both "home" and "away" parish registers.

Martina...
I came across two marriage certs a few years ago with my aunt and
uncle as she was still alive back I asked her why
She told me it was to do with my uncle name. The name he was known to
every one was Tony which was how he gave his name to the register but
my aunt then reminded him that his name was infact Arthur Edward
Anthony
So it had to be wrote out again but the two marriage certs there.

Jeff...

Did he need to get the Army's permission to marry, I wonder ? If so,
perhaps the first marriage was before permission was granted and the
second one was for the Army's benefit.
