1853 Shipwreck Survivors Descendants

Are there any descendants of the shipwreck of the Oriental Queen out there?
The ship was destroyed in the water near Mauritius, the crew escaped, some
coming to Melbourne, Australia to be paid by a company shipping agent there.
Would like to hear from anyone wanting to exchange knowledge of this. Bob.

Hi List - my first request.

My ggg-grandfather Henry Cook was shipwrecked on the
Oriental Queen near Mauritius. His painting of the scene
shows a burning vessel with four lifeboats rowing away from
it, no land in sight. I have no written account of this or
an exact date, however the Hobart Courier reported a vessel
by that name as being shipwrecked in their edition of
27.5.1853. Lloyds List index shows "Wrecked. Hillar. August
15. 18" However the filmed archives have the report pages as
missing, also not on The Times CD-rom. Has anyone any ideas
how to confirm this shipwreck, and his presence on board?

If this was the Convict Ship of that name, then the Public
Record Office
shows two records which might fill in some further details
about the
Oriental Queen's voyage you mention - "Office of the
Director General of the
Medical Department of the Navy and predecessors: Medical
Journals" would
seem to be the journal of the Surgeon on board, D Geoogs.
This is dated
1852-1853 so might perhaps include some reference to the
shipwreck. That is
found in ADM101/252. There is also a record TS18/499,
"Treasury Solicitors:
General Series Papers" relating to the transportation of 280
named males
from Great Britain to Van Diemen's Lane dated 5 October
1852. I imagine
these records may have formed part of the AJCP so may be
available in
Australia. I have only briefly used the Public Record
Office's online
able to give
you more suggestions for possible sources. ........... ""

If you have some names, it might help. It's quite possible that there
may be some descendents but they may not be aware that they are
because they have yet to explore that particular person/branch.
