Nicki...
Charles Bell b abt1843 and his wife Jane Eaton Hudson b abt1845 are recorded
with these names on their second son's birth certificate.
Searching for a marriage between them, the following pops up on FreeBMD
Charles Bell and Jane Eaton 1865 September Qtr Sheffield, Vol 9c P469
This fits as their first son was born in 1866.

Is there any reason why she may have been recorded as only Eaton for her
marriage, a mistake perhaps?

Is there any other 'normal' explanation?

Anne Chambers...
Might she have been born EATON, taken a stepfather HUDSON's surname,
but used her original surname when she married ?
Have you found her in the 1851 and 1861 censuses ?

Nicki...
That seems a sensible explanation.

Found her in 1871 onwards but of course she was married then.
Possibly this is her in 1851 HO107/2340/197/50
James Eaton Head 1796
Ann Eaton Wife 1810
Charles Son 1845
Harriet Daughter 1836
Jane Daughter 1842
William Eaton Son 1847

One reason I think this is her is that on the same census page there is a
Thomas Hinde (aged 89) and in 1861 Jane's future husband lodged with a
Thomas Hinde (aged 41), perhaps his son? It is all guesswork so far.

I can't find her as Jane Eaton or Hudson in 1861 - yet...

I've sent off for possible marriage certificates and birth certificates now.

Anne Chambers...
Pure speculation - there's a possible marriage
Marriages Dec 1847

Eaton Mary Whitechapel 2 536

Hudson Thomas Whitechapel 2 536

but neither EATON nor HUDSON are unusual names, and these two may not
even have married each other.
