Paul...
Dear Readers,

I'm having trouble tracking down some Wilkins ancestors in the 1881
census. In particular, Eveline Kate Wilkins (b. 1867 in Mutford,
Suffolk) who went by the name of Kate.

For those also researching Wilkins - what names have your Wilkins been
indexed as in the various censuses?

For instance, I've found Homes listed as Hornes where the 'M" has been
read as an "RN".

I've tired a couple of possible "readings" of Wilkins but haven't been
successful yet in the 1881 census.

Any help appreciated,

Paul Homes

Paul...
Thanks John.

I've learned a little more about the geography of England! I had found
that 1881 census entry but living relatives said, "No way was she a
servant".

Charani...
The one thing you have to remember with families is to take comments
like that with a generous pinch of salt :))

Families, esp the senior members, often don't like the idea that one
of their ancestors was a servant: but the truth is that a lot *were*
servants and there wasn't anything shameful in it either. After all
it was a job. They had a position, maybe only a lowly one initially
but it was a position. They could easily have been the envy of less
fortunate friends and acquaintances. Of course, if their "family" was
of sufficient social standing then they might even see some of the
"notables" of their day.

Of course, they were not living at that time! Kate told stories of her
family having "powdered footmen" and carriages. None of the money
survived down my line :)

Charani...
Her family (as in parents, siblings, etc) or her "family" (as in the
one she worked for)? Servants could be very possessive about their
"family" ;)) Remember you can't see quotation marks when they are
spoken :))
