Jan Stockley...
I think I have just found 'my' Thomas VASEY, aged 25, on Ancestry's
1851 census, but need help to decipher his address and occupation. He

Peter Goodey...
On reflection, I think it must be Silk Mercer!

is living somewhere? in Ludgate in the Parish of St George by St
Paul's, in a household of 20, possibly as an 'assistant'. In 1841,
aged 15, he was a draper's apprentice living in the household of his
master in Whitby so possibly the Head of the household in London is a
silk merchant.

Does the page need more identification than HO 107/1528?

Anne Chambers...
Probably not, but if you click on the 'View record'link, it will give
page number as well which saves wading through lots of names for that
piece ;)

Peter Goodey...
It most certainly does! Also needed are the folio number and an indication
which side of the sheet we're talking about (page number for example).
Ancestry provides this information.

Robert G. Eldridge...
Thought you need to be mindful that sometimes Ancestry refer a page
number to the wrong folio number in the 1841 census references.

Peter Goodey...
Not quite sure what you mean. If you're talking about Ancestry errors
then enough said!

But we also have to be aware that arrangement of pieces in the 1841
census is different from subsequent ones.

In the 1841 each BOOK was foliated such that each book in a piece starts
afresh at folio 1. That means the piece number...folio number...page
number system doesn't work and we have to also include the book number ie
piece number...book number...folio number...page number.

Robert G. Eldridge...
Perhaps an example of what I said might help.

Search via Ancestry for William ELDRIDGE born 1779 in the English 1841
census.

Then select the View Record option for the matching record at Weston
Turville, Buckinghamshire.

Ancestry shows the record as being on Page 9 of Folio 8 when I'm
seeing it as Page 9 of Folio 7.

Peter Goodey...
I see what you mean.

I'd never noticed that quirk before because I normally always note
references from the image. I think I'll go and check some of my own 1841
references to see if that's a general Ancestry problem (and to double
check that I haven't blindly copied what Ancestry said).

Never had this problem using microfilm .

Peter Goodey...
As it happens, I've found the one you mean.

15-16 Ludgate Street

Silk something Assistant (sorry)

john...
Class: HO107; Piece: 1528; Folio: 251; Page: 1
Silk Mercers Assistant

Anne Chambers...
Agreed !

Jan Stockley...
Can I assume that 15-16 Ludgate Street was the shop address with
living accommodation above the shop?

Peter Goodey...
Above. Below. Round the back. Who knows.

The 1851 PO Directory shows 15-16 Ludgate Street as Willey Richard & Co,
silk mers.

You can work out where it was located from the directory and a modern map
(the street numbers may have changed over the years). It appears to have
been on the south side of Ludgate Street, on the east corner of Creed

Peter Goodey...
I suppose I should have mentioned that Ludgate Street is now Ludgate
Hill.

Lane.

Jan Stockley...
Many thanks to Peter, Anne and John for such quick responses, their
answers were quite obvious when I looked again.
I'm sorry about the page ID, it's the first time I have used
Ancestry's census and I need a bit more practice.

Cheers Jan

Any help most gratefully received Cheers Jan
