I have a bit of a problem with the records for my paternal grandmother. From
her oldest daughter I have scant information:

Millicent Burch

Father was Mark Burch and Mother was Mary Cobbold

Thanks all. I had noted that Oppton was transcribed wrong and should be
Offton. That is also very close to Great Blakenham and Baylham.

The marriage details are interesting, she would have been about 23 when
married, not so young as suggested.
Still interested in the date though, and other children.. If anyone can find
him in pre 1868 census it might give another wife I can look for.

Re the details from the 1881...

Also told Mary married very young (17?) to an older man, who already had 8
children, she then had 13 and they adopted another, Cecil.

Mary was born in Suffolk, but village not known.

Known siblings were Izzy (not doubt contraction), Alice and Gert

My grandmother died on 25/12/1961 aged 68, giving a dob abt. 1893

As I don't have access yet to the originals, I am relying on the search
results at Ancestry.com. Here's what I have found so far:

1901 Census

Albert Burch abt 1885 Holbrook, Suffolk, England Son St Matthew Suffolk

Alice M Burch abt 1896 Holbrook, Suffolk, England Daughter St Matthew
Suffolk

Emmeline E Burch abt 1879 Lakingstone, Suffolk, England Daughter St
Matthew Suffolk

Mark Burch abt 1823 Baylham, Suffolk, England Head St Matthew Suffolk

Mary A Burch abt 1845 Oppton, Suffolk, England Wife St Matthew Suffolk

Millicent Burch abt 1893 Holbrook, Suffolk, England Daughter St Matthew
Suffolk

As this is the only Mark Birch with an Alice and a Millicent in, I am
assuming this is they (yes I know about 'assuming' but it is worth pursuing
for now)

However, 1881 census has this information:

Edward Burch abt 1865 Offton, Suffolk, England Son Tattingstone, Suffolk,
England

Ellen Burch abt 1870 Offton, Suffolk, England Daughter Tattingstone,
Suffolk, England

Emmeline Burch abt 1879 Tattingstone, Suffolk, England Daughter
Tattingstone, Suffolk, England

Frank Burch abt 1878 Tattingstone, Suffolk, England Son Tattingstone,
Suffolk, England

Lavinia Burch abt 1874 Stownpland, Suffolk, England Daughter Tattingstone,
Suffolk, England

Mark Burch abt 1826 Gt Blakenham, Suffolk, England Head Tattingstone,
Suffolk, England

Mary Burch abt 1842 Offton, Suffolk, England Wife Tattingstone, Suffolk,
England

Matilda Burch abt 1876 Bentley, Suffolk, England Daughter Tattingstone,
Suffolk, England

Rosanna Burch abt 1881 Tattingstone, Suffolk, England Daughter
Tattingstone, Suffolk, England

Considering the number of children, this all seems reasonable, Mary and
Emmeline are there, with same details, BUT, details for Mark Burch are
different:

B 1826 Great Blakenham in this one, but 1823 in Baylham in 1901.

Jenny M Benson...
Such a discrepancy in birth year is not uncommon and as the two parishes
are only about one-and-a-half miles distant from each other I wouldn't
worry about that either.

I have a similar case where one sibling always had place of birth as a
village about a mile distant from the one always stated for the rest of
the family.

A. Gwilliam...
My g. g. grandfather has been described as being from Milford, Burton,
and Llangwm.

The first is only referenced once, and appears to be a case of "name
the nearest major town to where I grew up". The second is the parish.
The third is the main village in the particular area he was from.
Confusingly, the village is in a different parish!

I'm pretty certain that he was in fact born in the village of Guilford,
which is directly referred to by exactly zero records about him.

On the other side of the family, neither of my two Scottish g. g.
grandparents appears to have ever decided what county they were from,
let alone anything more specific.

I guess it depends on people's mood and how exactly the question is
couched that's asked of them.

Can anyone check the actual scans to see if there was a transcription error?
Does anyone have access to the other census to check details?
