If Dave Mayall is lurking, I wonder if I could pose a little query on
something I happened upon by chance today?

I was doing a little research into the ancestry of Martin Clunes (terrific
actor with Toby Jug ears) and in the course of calling up Clunes births I
actually came across what I am pretty sure is his, as follows.....

Births March 1962
Alexander M Clunes Surrey N.E. 5g 609

As I say, I am virtually certain this is him, since searching the web reveals that his
full name is Alexander Martin Clunes and he was born on November 28
1961.

I rather thought FreeBMD had a general cut-off date of about 1911 for
births and, in fact, the last previous date for the Clunes births I called up

CWatters...
Tried searching for Smith births between 1950 and 1970. There are about
20-25 listed.

is 1905. Martin Clunes' entry is totally isolated. Has the policy changed,
Dave, or perhaps the transcriber is a fan of the actor!

David J Grimshaw...
Hi Roy,
Another possible answer to your question is that some one who is doing a
One Name Study has submitted this as FreeBMD will accept all One Name
submissions, I know this from experience as they had all the GRO indexed

roy.stockdill...
Good thought, David. However, I don't see Clunes as a Guild-registered
ONS, though of course this is not to say that someone isn't doing it.

Charani...
I would imagine there are quite a few one name studies which aren't
registered for one reason or another.

I am now slightly curious to know how many other famous living people
figure in the births in FreeBMD, since I understood when it first started up

Dave Mayall...
Well, it made an interesting question for a Monday morning!

As others have already commented, we dropped the 100 year rule a long while
back, so recent births, including the births of the famous will appear if
somebody has transcribed them.

This isn't a part of a One Name Study. It is, in fact a part of a file
consisting entirely of the births of famous people. I can only assume that
the transcriber is a fan!

The complete list of well known persons from the file is;

Trueman,Frederick S
Beardsley,Peter A
Enfield,Henry R
Hague,William J
Gervais,Ricky D
Hardy,Jeremy J
Mabbutt,Gary V
Pasquale,Joseph E
Spencer,Diana F
Bailey,Julian T
Dando,Jill W
Self,William W
Clunes,Alexander M
White,Marco P

Make of that what you will (the transcriber has been known to post here, so
might want to say more).

they had agreed with the GRO to stop at 1911. Not, you understand, that
I am complaining - in fact, the more the merrier as far as I'm concerned!

Charani...
If they do stop at 1911, it'll deprive a lot of people of a very
useful resource. The fact that they are accepting more recent data
suggests that not to be so.

No doubt Dave will clarify the position in due course

surname of my One Name Study.
