Alan Holmes...
In the 1940s I was friendly with a family called Burnet(t) who lived in
South Ealing, but due to the moves forced upon us in those days I lost
touch.

The only name I can remember is Thelma Burnet(t), and she married in about
1948/49/50.

Is there someone who had access to the marriage registers of that period who
could look up the name for me and let me have the name of the man she
married, he was a scot who came from an area south of Edinburgh.

Koromo...
Or, you can look on the free Ancestry BMD indexes. These look likely:

Jul-Aug-Sep 1949
Thelma E Burnett, Penny, Ealing, Vol 5e/58
Edwin N Penny, Burnett, Ealing, Vol 5e/58

Alan Holmes...
Thanks that looks about right!

Alan

Cheers
Koromo

David J Grimshaw...
Alan,
searching through the index's.
Or you could try a big city Public library near you as they may have the
index's, if this is the case then all it will cost you is travel costs
and your time to search the index's.
Once you have found your ladies marriage year and quarter notate the
area volume number, page number and the surname of her spouse, then go
to that part of the Micro film or Micro fiche to find the person with
the same area, volume number and page number with BURNET as the spouse
and you then have a match.
You only need the marriage certificate if you want the date of marriage
and the Fathers name of either party.

Hope this helps some.
