I found a Thomas J. Clark listed on the 1850 census for Ripley County,
Indiana, USA. His birthplace is shown as the Isle of St. Anthony. The 1860
census simply shows him as being from England.
I have tried to locate such an island to no avail. Does anyone on the list
know the location of the ISLE OF ST. ANTHONY, presumably off the coast of
England. i noticed several islands called St. [something] just west of Lands
End in Cornwall; there is a St. Agnes but no St. Anthony.

According to the Shell Book of the Islands of Britain there is no such
island. Have you seen a scan or just a transcription of the original page?

Any help much appreciated. Accordng to Ancestry.com, which indexed this
location as the 'isle of Anthony", Thomas Clark is the only person on the 1850
U.S. census who gave this location as his birthplace. I noticed one New
Jersey census entry for the Isle of St. Bartholomew, and I wonder where that is
as well. But, since I am from the Ripley Co., Indiana, vicinity, I am
primarily interested in the Isle of St.Anthony.

A guess, but it might be the area around Antony, Cornwall - over the
Torpoint ferry from Devonport, and up the hill. It's on a peninsula,
rather than an island, but there are similar locations described as
"isle of".
