Liz J...
I have just received a marriage certificate for a marriage in the December
Qtr of 1862. The month in the When Married box is not very clear but the
number is definitely 25. As the only months it could be are Oct, Nov and
Dec, I have ruled out Oct and Nov as the second letter is definitely not an
'o' and and the last letter is definitely not a 't'.

Anyone who has been doing family history for any length of time will
have several Christmas Day marriages and baptisms, too.

For many people in earlier centuries it was just about the only day
in the year they got off work! Please try and stop thinking with a
mindset of modern-day attitudes.

Jeff...
To be fair to Liz J I didn't detect any 'attitude' She
simply asked "Were/Are marriages on Christmas Day usual?"

Eve McLaughlin...
Common - in fact, in London parishes, where many couples were not that
bothered about peperwork, the C19 clergyman sometimes offered free
weddings on Xmas day, to encourage the making of honest women.
An ancient archdeacon of my aquaintance said his father was still
offering this service in the 1930s ('but I wouldn't do it - I like my
Christmas tuck in too much.')

Frank Erskine...
I came across one the other week somewhere in my tree.

Were/Are marriages on Christmas Day usual?

Parrotfish...
My Grandparents married on 25th December 1905.

Peter Goodey...
Aarrrgghhhhh!!! No. Please. Not again!!!!!!!!

Phil C....
My grandmother was married on Christmas day and died on Christmas day.
Not as much of a coincidence as it might at first appear.
