Gang,
I'm wondering if SKS out there can do a marriage lookup in the GRO Index for
me please.
The lookup request is for marriages in Sep Qtr 1870.
I have a John Ettery SULLY (my relative) with the marriage reference
Clutton, Vol 5c, Page 927.
Anne Chambers...
I have one source saying his wife was Susannah DOWLING, and another source
saying his wife was Susan Barrow ROBBINS.
Can SKS please look up the following names and see what their marriage
references are please.
John Ettery SULLY (just to check reference I have is correct)
Susan Barrow ROBBINS
Susannah DOWLING
Hopefully this will allow me to sort things out, although its possible they
may all have the same reference
I'd do it myself but the opening hours of my local LDS FHC make getting
there almost impossible without taking a day off, which is a bit extreme for

How far away from you from a computer, then?!! Just look up FreeBMD and
you'll find all the information your asking for.

a 10 minute lookup.

entries have not yet been transcribed, via Ancestry's current free access to
the full indexes.
At this date, there were normally four names per page (two marriages). If
you are unlucky and both brides had the same Christian name, then you will
need to buy the certificate to find out which one is the right one.
Hope this helps

Caroline,
That's where the original information came from (plus crosscheck with 1881
and 1901 census). I was hoping to confirm with a cross-check to the
original source (GRO Index) so I could definitively confirm that Susan
Barrow ROBBINS had the same reference as John Ettery SULLY, and that
Susannah DOWLING was a different reference (or not there at all).

Hi Kevin,
The GRO index is just that - an index to the actual register. The only
way to get the information you require is to buy the certificate, or use
the Ancestry.com beta lookupof the GRO index or pay for 1837online and
look up both Susan ROBBINS and Susannah DOWLING yourself.

You may not have realised that it's possible to check scans of the index
on FreeBMD now.
Once you searched and found the person you want, clicking on the
spectacles by the red Info at the end of the line will lead to instructions
on how to view the scan of the index.
Clicking on the page number gives the names of the brides and
grooms with the same reference. Obviously that helps to find the quarter(s)
which have the names you are looking for, but you would need to buy a
certificate to be sure which groom married which bride.
Ancestry also have scans of the index pages which can be searched
for free on their Beta search of BMD.
Note that the search should find the page for each of the four quarters
of the year, but it doesn't always find them all. Searching for a name
which would appear slightly beofre or after the one you want may
find the page for any missing quarter.
Best wishes

I think you are under a misapprehension here. The marriage will not have a
unique reference number, only the page it is on. In 1870 there would
generally have been two marriages per page (in earlier years it was more).
You can check the original index via FreeBMD by clicking on the little
spectacle icon to the right of the reference.
Best wishes

and the *indexes* are in alphabetical order, so the parties to a
marriage are not on the same page
