Vic Blake...
Recently someone very kindly looked up the above family for me in the 1861
census even though my own efforts continue to fail to find them. There
remains some confusion over the mother's name (could the Ma of her middle
name in fact be Na for Naunton - which is the middle name of my strongest
lead?)

I wonder whether someone would be so kind as to try the 1851 census for me.
This would help me enormously to move forward. According to my information
it should reveal the following, among others perhaps, and hopefully the
father's name too (which was missing in the 1861 lookup):

Susan Ma (or Na) Beake (Mother), 1817 Lambeth, Surrey
George Gs Beake (Son) abt 1847 Chatham, Kent
William By Beake (Son) abt 1845 Chatham, Kent

Data Junkie...
Can't see them in 1851 even using the image from 1861 but lateral
thinking reveals these births and marriage ....

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Births Mar 1845
BEAKE William Bailey Medway 5384

Births Dec 1846
Beake George Giles Medway 5415

Births Jun 1860
BEAKE Frederick Thomas Medway 2a350

As an adjunct to this, What might George (Gs) refer to, and William (By)? I

Steven Gibbs...
Their births are on FreeBMD. Gs = Giles, By = Bailey.

.. as is the marriage Dec Q 1843 of Thomas Beake. A matching entry is
Susan Naunton Bailey.
