I am looking for free or cheap software that allows Gedcom import and
export and has options to produce some nice charts.

Any suggestions?

You can get more information on soc.genealogy.computing

Jeff...
I'd add that when you settle on software don't go "hell for
lather' entering all of your data.

Enter a small amount. Try the various reports, exporting
GEDCOMS etc

That way you can settle on a consistent strategy for how you
deal with note, sources etc. before entering the bulk of
your data.

products tab. Free. Has a mail-list for help and user-groups around
the world. Makes a lot of charts but if none of them suit, there's a
separate add-on for a very modest cost that does fan charts, bowties,
box charts and the like.

I would second that. The add-on is called PAF-Companion - and produces
infinitely better output than does the basic program. You can download a
trial (limited functionality) version for free - but the key to unlock the
full functionality only costs peanuts ($6.75US - about 4 GBP) - well worth
doing.
