Is anybody doing anything on British Genealogy as this could be a great
subject to discuss on this forum!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
John Cartmell...

Yes.
I'm trying to work out why I'm J2b1 (J2e1) by linking the genetic information
with paper records and the geography and (contradictory) historical
information about Ribchester and the area of central Lancashire to the North

What in the world does J2b1 (J2e1) mean?

It's the description of a Y DNA haplograoup. It used to be J2e1 but is now
called J2b1. The haplogroup refers to the group of people descended from a
particular individual down the paternal line so his group descend from 'J'
10-15kya, J2 8-10kya, &c. By looking at a range of DNA identifiers it's
possible to estimate where and when those individuals lived - in this case my
paternal line goes back to those involved in the Neolithic Agricultural
Revolution at the north end of the fertile crescent in the near east soon
after the last Ice Age. The question is how did my nearer ancestors end up in
Lancashire and you can have lots of fun speculating as others with the same
DNA-identified ancestor have tended to congregate in the Balkans, Greece or
Italy. Sarmatian cavalry?, Greek trader?, Roman administrator?
Whichever guess I make is likely to be tested by more data in the near future
as the information is pouring in.
Of course one ancestor over that many generations isn't much - so perhaps I
should test my mt DNA (maternal line) - and at some time in the future the
testing for the DNA contribution from all my other ancestors might become
accurate enough to be worthwhile. You can (with Y DNA information) check the
validity of your surname line (assuming you have cousins with whom to
cross-check) and much of the information is available on-line.

and West of there (where my earliest 'confirmed' ancestor lived).
Anyone researching J2b1 OR Roman Lancashire OR Medieval Lancashire and willing
to have their expertise tested? ;-)
