Can someone tell me what '(Not AB)' means against an individual's birthplace

Without having seen the particular entry you are talking about, I suspect
that it is not a referencer to the birth place but actually placed in the final
column which was for handicaps/disabilities (next to the birthplace
column) and may have stood for "Not Able Bodied", ie not fit for work
perhaps.

Sorry, Roy - I had assumed it was a common abbreviation hence supplying
little info.
John Borgnis Adams - My Great-great-Grandfather.
I'm looking at John B. Adams b.1835. Living at 278 Amhurst Rd, Hackney with
wife, six children and one servant.
Employed as a Bank Clerk in Hackney.
Birthplace given as 'Kensington (not AB)'
Family History Library Film 1341062
Public Records Office Reference RG11
Piece / Folio 0289 / 91
Page Number 46
I hadn't thought of AB = able-bodied but as an employed bank clerk with 6
children this may not be the case.
Also I have 2 photos of John Adams, depicting him as upright, fully-limbed
and fully-functional!
Thanks for any further insights.

Looking at the image it is a little more complicated.
It had first been entered as "Surrey, Kensington"
Then "Surrey" was crossed out.
Additionally an entry had been made in the handicap column and then
crossed out. The crossed out entry is unreadable.
However, he appears in the 1891 with no entry in the handicap column.
His place of birth is listed as "Surrey, Stockwell"
This leads me to believe that in the 1881 he may have given his
birthplace as "Surrey, Kennington" which got written as "Kensington"
thus causing confusion.
The mysterious entry may have been some kind of attempt to correct that.
Then again - I could be totally wrong!

Clearly, you are working from a transcript, rather than actually viewing the
film.
The place of birth is actually given as "Surrey, Kensington".
Surrey has been struck through, and "not ab" has been written in a different
hand.
There is also an entry in the disability colum, struck out so as to be
unreadable.
