Joe Bloggs...
I am working on my family tree and am doing quite well on my maternal side,
back to 1830s. However, my father does not speak to many members of his
family and so, knows very little about them and I have struggled to get any
information from him.

I am working on tracing a Timothy GREENOUGH, born c.1915 in England,
possibly in Liverpool. His mother was called Sarah and was born c.1895.
Timothy (Timmy) had a brother and a sister (no further details on them).

I am hoping to find out his father's name so that I then have both parents'
names to trace back on.

By 1915 the mother's maiden name is included in the GRO birth index.
Once you have found Timothy's registration, you'll be able to find the
brother and sister by trawling through the indices looking for any
GRRENOUGHs with the same mother's maiden name.

Now that you know the mother's maiden name, you need to look for her
marriage. If you're lucky, the marriage will have taken place at the
time when the surnames of the spouse was given in the marriage index.
When you've found a Sarah who married a GREENOUGH, look in
the index for GREENOUGH in the same year and quarter and that will
give you her husband's name.

You're back into the period when you're going to have to start buying
certificates to get the next step back or buying subscriptions.
