John Bromley,
Re:- Hampton in Radnorshire
I got in touch with Powys Archives and they said:-
"Thank you for your enquiry. I have looked through our place name index, I
cannot find a "Hampton". The
nearest is Harpton, in the parish of New Radnor. There are properties with
the name Hampton, but no place name. Most of the "Hamptons" are in
Herefordshire or Shropshire. Archives Assistant/Cynorthwywr Archifau

Maybe this will help you I went to web-search and wrote Hampton, Radnorshire
and it came up with Hampton Charles and Hampton Wafer mainly in
Herefordshire, but included in parts of Radnorshire. An old map will show
this. Some County boundaries have altered over the years.

Hello Dawn,

Thanks for this in-depth search on my behalf. I can't even find the
original posting, but the query originated from the 1871 Census for Wales
for the family of Edward LEWIS born "abt 1821 Hampton Radnorshire".
The Census location was Heyop which I found to be a parish just NW
of Knighton.

This family also lists a lodger born abt. 1853 in Ascob, which I now
understand to be Cascob, " a Parish partly in the Liberties of New Radnor,
neighbouring Llanfihangel Rhydithon" about 5 miles S Knighton.

The enumerator may have been stretched to understand what he was told
or recorded what he thought he had heard!

So "Hampton" may have been a figment of somebody's imagination!

Thanks again for your help.

I can add a postscript to my last message, thanks to your help.

My Bartholomews Road Atlas of Great Britain, 5 miles to the inch,
shows a tiny speck, labelled "Harpden Co." about 2 miles ESE of
New Radnor.

I also found an article (web-search again) on Sir George Cornewall (sic)
LEWIS (1806-1863) who was the son of Sir Thomas Frankland LEWIS of
"Harpden Court near New Radnor".

So I will now check the original Census page and see whether it
looks like Hampton or Harpton. Could be a transcription error in
the Census index or the enumerator's mistake.

John,

I have a genealogical interest in Harpton (although maybe not Harpton Court)
great-uncle of mine once wrote to my father about Evans relatives at Harpton. They are
linked to me through my great-grandmother Fanny Phillips, who married at St Peter's
Evancoyd, a little north-east of Harpton -

Let me know if your Harpton connection is confirmed!

BTW, an email to your Reply-To address bounced :(

So thanks for inspiring me to greater efforts which I'm now sure have
brought forth a rich harvest!

My last posting, I promise!

For Harpden, above, please read Harpton.
