Is there someone with access to 1901 On Line who will do me a favour please?
To explain: I have a relative, Alice Williams, born Poplar 1877, father died
when she was young, mother remarried, who married Richard Harris Jun 1896
Stepney. A daughter, also Alice was born Dec 1898 Stepney. There was also a
son, Henry, whom I thought was born Jun 1900, this I wish to check.
A search of the index of 1901 On Line didn't throw up any Richard or Alice
or Henry. Neither did Ancestry. After various searches of 1901 On Line I
requested any Alice Harris born between 1870 and 1900 with Limehouse as the
Keyword. This now produced three, two of them being:-
Name Age Born County Parish
Alice Harris 24 London Mile End London Limehouse
Alice Harris 2 London Limehouse London Limehouse
I am unable to download images with 1901 On Line, so with this information
I have searched again the index of Ancestry. Still nothing.
Desperate measure, went through all the images of Limehouse, several hundred
of them! Cannot find them. Analysed the information from 1901 On Line, and I
see that the mother is the 5th person on the list of the household and the
daughter is number 6. Which doesn't help a lot. If somebody will be kind
enough to tell me the piece number and the folio number of the entry in 1901
On Line, I can check with Ancestry to see why it hasn't shown up. I suspect
that either there is a page missing from Ancestry, or the indexing of 1901
On Line is incorrect and they are not in Limehouse.

I only looked at Ancestry, it's RG 13/320 f 40 p 19. They have it indexed
as Harries (just searched for Alice b abt 1898 with mother called Alice
in Limehouse).

Thank you Peter. I tried with one 'r' and with 2'ss' I somehow missed the
Harries spelling. It's a very poor quality image that I get, so I 'm not
surprised I missed it when scaning through so many.
I was hoping to find information on Henry the son. I had understood that he
was Henry James, born about 1900. There was a Henry James in BMD born 1899
and I had followed that, but began to suspect that it might be Henry William
, also born 1899, so hoped the census would clarify. No Henry in the
census!. Back to BMD, find there is another Henry James born 1902. Back to

Thanks Charani, they are a nuisance with these nicknames. At the moment I'm trying to elliminate the Henry William, (not yet showing up in the 1901),

there are a lot of combinations to try.

I'm trying to run to earth a James who also called himself James
William and William James apparently as the fancy took him.
Mike Williams...

That sounds a bit like one that I've got in my tree. He was born as
"James Jones" but he always used the name "William Williams" as the
"Father's name" on the birth certificates of his children. I believe
that he used that name so that people would confuse him with "William
McWilliams", the permanently institutionalised husband of the woman he
was living with. It looks like he never officially changed his name, so
he occasionally appears as "Jimmy Jones" in some documents, particularly
after Ann (Mc)Williams died.

It does make it a bit difficult to know what name to look for.
James was boarding with an EVANS family, had a son by the wife but
registered the birth himself, giving his name as James EVANS. The
husband's name was Evan EVANS but goodness knows where he was. Evan
died 3 years later and the boy appears in the next census with James'
own surname.

Middle names aren't given in the census too often. It would depend on
the information given and what the enumerator included.
Have you looked for a Harry?

Again thanks, Alec Lefevre
