I am looking for information on "Mr. Locock Webb", a member of the Bar
in 1870 and located in Croydon. The name is mentioned in a court
transcript but I have been unable to find anything about him. I would
like to know if he might be my great-grandfather whose name was William
Locock Webb and who lived in Croydon at that time. Any help would be

Have you checked the various censuses? The 1881 census has a CHARLES LOCOCK
WEBB a Queen's Counsel, aged 58, born Chard, Somerset, living at Acton, with
wife Sarah A L Webb, 54, daughter EMMA LOCOCK WEBB, 27, and daughter and
son-in-law Harry R Harding, an assistant actuary, and Agness M Harding, aged
27 and 28 respectively.
There is also a WILLIAM L WEBB, aged 56, a stockbroker, also born Chard,
Somerset, living at Penge, Surrey, with wife and 8 children, including
twins.

He would appear to be the William Locock Webb who was "a stock & share
broker of 8 Finch Lane trading under the name of Webb & Co." - The Times 31
Jan 1866.

Obviously, you need to do more research but there looks a distinct
possibility to me that Charles and William were brothers. Look at other
censuses to see whether the L in William's name in fact was for Locock. If
it turns out it was, then I would think the likelihood of them being
brothers is virtually certain.

Further to my earlier message, the IGI has Charles Locock Webb, born 26
November 1822 and christened 24 July 1823, and William Webb (no middle name
shown), born 14 April 1824 and christened 24 July 1824, at High Street
Independent Chapel, Chard, Somerset, both the sons of SAMUEL WEBB and MARY
ANN LOCOCK (batch no. C083601).
It would seem almost beyond doubt that they were the two men who appear in
the 1881 census in the London area, since the ages and birthplace check out
in both cases.
Frankly, I can't see what was so difficult about this. It took me under 5
minutes.

web-search finds several references to that name including this one which
suggests his first name begins with a C.
