Transcription errors in Ancestry.co.uk Census records

Roger Mills \(aka Set Square\)...
I have come across quite a few instances where place names have been spelled
incorrectly - or are even completely wrong - often due to difficulty in
reading the handwritten records. This can be frustrating when searching for
a particular place! There seems to be a mechanism for feeding back
corrections to *people* names, but not yet to *place* names.

Tids...
I was gonna remark about the 'straight down the line' transcription
that occurs on ancestry to the point of ridiculous-ness. On one
census recently I saw "refused infounation".........surely they could
be flexible enough to realise that it says "refused information"?

I also have a family surname transcribed as Worrall except for
one son who is transcribed as Wornall........they couldn't work
out his surname would be the same as the rest of his family?

I am finding the whole thing frustrating and, frankly, annoying.

Tids...
Also.....I have a whole family on the 1871 census transcribed
except for the father (head).......but why?......his name is clear.
These errors are causing me headaches and lots of work which
no doubt others are experiencing too.

Roger Mills \(aka Set Square\)...
With the shear amount of information to transcribe, and the difficulty of
reading some of the handwriting, it is inevitable that there will be errors
and omissions. What is obvious to us when concentrating on one small area
may not be so obvious to someone trying to transcribe a lot of data quickly,
without much time to reflect on the reasonableness of it.

A. Gwilliam...
I agree in broad terms, but their quality control is clearly
insufficiently rigorous.

For example, last time that I checked, Bristol wasn't in West Africa!

Charani...
Nor Taunton in Somalia!

It would nice if there *were* a mechanism to enable corrections to be
notified, though. This would benefit everybody.

A. Gwilliam...
Absolutely. I find FreeBMD's reporting mechanism to be simplicity
itself, and I really can't see why a commercial entity that is charging
people for access to data can't provide something similar.

Dave Mayall...
It's nice to get a bit of praise for it sometimes :-)

Others are quick to condemn it, because it won't let them waffle on about
irrelevancies in the source field.

Jeff...
I must admit I found the facility irritating the first time
I used it, because it simply wouldn't let me add any further
clarification. But, when I thought about it, it made a lot
of sense. My correction was implemented in a very reasonable
time span.

In fact, when I look back over several years, every time
I've encountered a difficulty with FREE BMD it has been
because I failed to read available instructions or just
didn't think things through.

Does anyone know when it will be possible to submit place name corrections?
