As I understand it, the idea is to award it to the person who, in the opinion
of a majority of the voting viewers, has achieved the greatest
performance in British sport during the current 12 months. Nothing to do
with whether or not they have a personality. The list of winners for the last
few years is as follows.
2005 - Andrew Flintoff for his role in England winning back the Ashes.
2004 - Kelly Holmes for her double gold medal triumph at the Olympics
2003 -Jonny Wilkinson for his role in England winning the RU World Cup
2002 - Paula Radcliffe for her marathon world record, wins in the London
and Chicago Marathons, Commonwealth 5,000 metres and European
10,000 metres
2001 - David Beckham, England soccer captain
2000 - Rower Steve Redgrave for his Olympic gold medal feats
Previous winners include names like Chris Chataway (the first-ever in
1954), Bobby Moore, Henry Cooper, Jackie Stewart, Mary Peters, Steve
Ovett, Sebastian Coe, Ian Botham, Steve Cram, Nick Faldo and
Jonathan Edwards.

And Zara Phillips' mother.

I wouldn't have thought anyone would argue with that lot, but there are
plenty who might query Zara Phillips' right to win it, especially as horse
eventing is not exactly normally a sport that's exactly on the back page of
every newspaper every day.
Tids...

Wasn't Phil Taylor the darts player on the list? I fail to
see how they call darts a sport.....more a pastime.
