it mean when two surnames are given? For example, in Q2 1914:
SALMOND Hugh A.B. ---- BUCKLEY or SERCOMBE ---- Fulham 1a 806
Is one of them the bride's maiden name and the other her first husband?
If so, can one be sure which is which? Or is it possible that there was
no previous marriage and she just went by an alias? (e.g. perhaps she
was usually known by the surname of the man who married her mother

I note the bride's name was Ellen Buckley. If you enter Ellen Buckley
into FreeBMD, plus the spouse surname Sercombe, you will find a
potential marriage of Ellen Buckley to Christopher H Sercombe in March
quarter 1907 at Islington. I say "potential" because there are two other
names on the same page, so it may be just a coincidence. You'd have to
get the certificate to be sure.

I recently come across a "Brown or Ingleby". I know that the bride's
maiden name was Brown, and assume Ingleby was a former marriage though
FreeBMD can't find it. So on a sample of two, the first name is the
maiden name, but it would be nice to see it stated somewhere as a rule.
Does anyone have access to the preface pages of any registers?
