Tom...
Three different branches of the family are trying to work on a family
tree together and share research and information. Two of the group have
mac's and one has a PC. Is there any well rated software that all three
can use?
IF not what software would you recomend for the two different systems
and is there a way to share data if the software is different?

melsonr...
You've gotten a number of suggestions for stand-alone applications. Might I
suggest you look into a hosted phpGedView or The Next Generation (TNG). Both
programs allow, even encourage, collaborative genealogy and, while I prefer to
run my own webserver and phpGedView installation, do not require that you do so
app and look at the ads on the righthand side of the page for hosting sites.

best to use an online system

like Tribalpages

which can alos be private and password protected if you include the living

one of you PC users should dopwnload a gedcom and post it to RootsWeb's
WorldConnect Project

Names: 411793345 Surnames: 4104285 Databases: 381835

and it certainly leads to contacts with new cousins

I use Yahoo! GroupsYahoo! Groups.
The easiest way for groups of people to communicate on the Internet.
Stay in touch with friends, family and colleagues; Discuss sports, ...
groups.yahoo.com/

for runninga several mailing lists

is good for exchanging public data with 3 having permission to post

½I assume the three of you have dsl or better

28k dial ups make things tedious except email
then the yahoo group as a list wouldbe good
again not forprivate matters

runningPC programmes ona MAC is not thebest
better get a spare PC

do the graphics on the mac

but a slow Pc is okfor genealogy based on text files like a ged and email

lastly

notes

Ancestry's Online Family Tree is a free service that allows you to
record, preserve, and share your family tree on the Internet without any
additional software. In a matter of minutes, you can enter several
generations of your family in your own password-protected Online Family
Tree. And if you already have a family tree (GEDCOM) file, you can
import it directly into your Online Family Tree.

The Online Family Tree is the first family tree application that allows
you and other family members to add, edit, or delete information in your
Online Family Tree at the same time, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

How to Create Your Genealogy GEDCOM File

The Online Family Tree allows you to start your family tree from
scratch. The instructions below will help you convert data created by
other genealogy software and then import that data into an Online Family
Tree database

server-based software, will allow you to do what you want, if you have
access to a web server running PHP.

singhals...
Far's I know, there's no platform-independent program for genealogy.
(GEDCOM isn't a program, it's a data format).

Frankly, under the circs, why not just use plain-text e-mails to one
another. "Hi, guys, I found Char1otte Ha11's birthdate -- 12 Never 2525
in Podunk, Kenya" MUCH easier than each of you sorting through a large
family tree to see what's new.

If the PCer is willing to buy a used MAC, the three of you can use
Reunion; if the Macies are willing to buy PCs, you can use Legacy which
allows exactly what you're wanting to do. But, cross-platform -- nada.

Charlie Hoffpauir...
Or, since the Mac is able to run PC programs, all three can use a PC
program, like Legacy which Cheryl advised, or RootsMagic, or The
Master Genealogist.... but while Reunion is a great program (Mac only
now) Generations is NOT one that many people would recommend for a PC.

Ron Parsons...
Best software is Reunion for the Macs. There is an older version for the
PC that is called something like Generations.
