This isn't a genealogy specific computer issue, but I wonder if anyone can
help me.
I am using IE and having trouble seeing a particular web page.
Others on the BC mailing list at Yahoo can access the page fine.
The trouble started about three weeks ago, when I find access
is nigh on impossible.
Joe Makowiec...
At first I thought it might be IE so I tried Mozila Firefox, but I
still can not see the page. My anti virus is AVG and I have it
updated everyday, I have deactivated it and tried, and at first I
though this was the problem, but apparently not. I have added the
BookCrossing URL to my accept list, but this has made no change.
I have emailed support at BC, but had no response.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what might be the problem,
and how I can rectify the situation.

It has a lot of javascript you haven't turned that off have you ?
Mrs Julie Goucher...
|
No, I've just checked, and the boxes are ticked.

I use Mozilla 1.7.12 and was able to access the site with no problems.
What firewall are you running? Is BookCrossing allowed in there?
Have any settings in there been adjusted recently?
I've one or two sites that have suddenly decided I don't have cookies

Then use this site to make sure this working.
Scroll to the right there and do a Verify. If it won't verify, then do the
download, install, & verify and then try your website again.

Uh, Bob? That's JAVA. I just checked the OP's problem page, and I see

I'm a bit puzzled at how checking your Java setup should, would or
could resolve potential javascript issues.
I've always understood Java and javascript to be different beasts.

What puzzles me is that your post contains neither a real nor a tentative
solution to the problem at hand. I've always understood that offering solutions
was one of the purposes in posting.

One of...but certainly not the only reason for doing so.
Elucidating another aspect of the problem which has not previously been
made manifest while offering no actual solution is also a reason for
posting.

I guess I'm to assume that the above is your reason for posting then. Too
bad you don't have anything on-topic to offer. In any case, belaboring the
obvious as in the prior posts leads nowhere and doesn't equate to asking some
questions that really should be asked. We do know that the webpage does some
browser-sniffing to present alternative renderings, but we actually don't even
know what the lady is seeing on her screen. So let me snip & condense
the problem:
*) using IE and having trouble seeing a particular web page.
*) started about three weeks ago,
*) when I find access is nigh on impossible.
questions:
Had it worked up to three weeks ago?
Mrs Julie Goucher...
What is seen on the screen when attempting to access the website?
A blank screen? What color? Any pattern?
Or do you get a 'page not found' error?
Mrs Julie Goucher...
|
There is an "I" and the page is not found.
|
If it's the latter, then please describe your hardware connection to the
Internet - modem, router? Describe any firewall software such as Norton, Zone
Alarm, etc.
Mrs Julie Goucher...
|
I used a router, which I have turned off and on again. My anti virus is
AVG and I use Windows XP Pro firewall.

no evidence of java anywhere on it. In fact, I have java disabled in
my browser, so I'd know right away. Java != javascript, which that
page does have some of, but again, the page works even if javascript is
disabled.
Robert Heiling...

Uh, Joe? Do you have a solution to her problem? No you say? Then will any harm
be done by having her visit that Sun website. No you say? Ahhh! I didn't think
so. Could we simply wait and see what happens? :-)

Mrs Julie Goucher...
|
I went to the site and did the latest download of Java then
did the above. The web page confirmed by installation of
Java.
Robert Heiling...
|
You only needed to do the download if a Verify failed as that was only intended
as an additional quick sanity check of your browser and syswtem. But no harm
done.
|
I still have the "I" and page can not be displayed.

allowed for them, which I do
I have set the site to the allowed list. No settings have been changed.
I keep my PC updated with anti virus daily.

allowed for them, which I do.
If no one here can come up with a solution, I'd suggest subbing to
alt.pcnews and asking in there. There are very good techies in there
and they are friendly, so don't be afraid to post :))

Thanks for that. I'll nip over there and post the question. Interesting,
I could access site on Friday, but not since.
