Family Tree Maker 2005 question

If wrong place to ask this - sorry but new to this.

I am working on genealogy and someone gave me their old copy of Family Tree Maker 2005
which I have a couple questions about. If there is another forum for it please let me
know.

Does the program automaticaly save the file when you exit the program? What if you do not

The following quote from the Help file of FTM 2006 may answer your
question:

"SAVING FAMILY FILES

"You do not need to constantly save your information because Family Tree
Maker saves your information regularly as you use the product, as well
as when you exit. This helps prevent loss of your data.

"Note: You cannot quit the program without saving. To get rid of any
changes you make, you must fix them manually or make separate backup
files regularly so you can revert to an old file as needed. Consider
making a separate backup right before you make any major changes to the
data in your file."

Under File on menu under the Family View I see a Save View and Save View As (Which are
greyed out) but no Save or Save As like most programs have.

No one has addressed this. It is possible to amend some diagrams, and
save the "view" (the amended diagram) for later use. The menu items
refer to these (non-standard) charts/diagrams, not the main data
information.

What if I want to manually save the file as I go along or if I really screw it up and want

make back ups at the beginning of the session
to clean a file
use Menu Tools Compact

which creates an extra ftm file from the ftw

chose to make it on an external hard disk for example
under the Help menu
go to online help

1. From the File menu, select Backup ...

The Backup Family File dialog box appears.

2. Specify where you want to store your backup file. The available
locations will vary depending on how your computer is configured. If
you're backing up to a floppy disk or writable CD, make sure that you
have a blank disk in the appropriate drive. (Click here to review
suggestions for backing up to CD.) If you want to back up to a different
custom directory than the one displayed, click the Change button. The
Change Filename or Directory dialog box appears to let you choose a
location. Click here for more information on this dialog box. You can
even make a backup of your data to the Internet.

3. Click the Backup button.

Your family file is backed up to the specified location. A small window
displays the progress of your backup. You're then informed that your
file was successfully backed up.

FTM is a database program, and as such, it saves your data after every
entry of information, so it is in effect "saving your work as you go
along". If you want to have to opportunity of going back to the
"original" file, you need to institute an effective backup process....
such as including a date/time stamp in your file name, and
continuously changing the "name" of your file, this way you won't be
continually overwriting your older information.

However, most people seem to be comfortable with the program
continuously saving your information.
