Why do you like your Software

R. Scott...
I wish to ask you the people for a few moments of your prolly hurried day to
help me sift through the piles of Sales speak in software.

I'm not asking for the BEST, because I will receive 400 posts of use this
...

But, I've done this in other forums, and received very informative answers
as to why someone likes a certain software.

I've been using BK for ever, but its always seemed well plain and doesn't
intuitively add someone and I get people connected that shouldn't and it
seems to take an act of GOD to get it undone. It has other niggles that
just bug me. Print outs are not that special either. And web publishing is
nil.

SO, I'm looking around for something else, Price wise would like something
reasonable (I consider around 50 or less reasonable).

Post your [munged] email address and I'll make you an offer you can't
refuse.

but I didn't like it. It seemed very limited in its options. It
wasn't particularly user friendly as far as I was concerned. I found
it difficult and not intuitive when it came to amalgamating
individuals into families. So I just use it for downloading GedComs
from familysearch.

The other free program that I've used was Legacy. I found that easy
to use, intuitive, user friendly and it does just about everything I
want. It's so easy to use that my then 10 year old dau installed the
program on her computer and happily started inputting data for me.
She had more trouble deciphering my original data than she did
figuring out how to use Legacy!! :)) I've since upgraded to the
DeLuxe version (paid for) for the extra features which I find very
useful.

The only real way to find out what alternative suits you is to try as
many different programs as you can. Most, if not all, come with a
free trial if they only offer a paid for version.

I really don't want Salesmen speak, I would like if you could, describe to
me as if I was sitting in your house and you found this neat software and I
should try it because

A lot depends on what output your desire... a web page narrative, a web
page chart of some type, a printed report, a printed chart, a
manuscript suitable to be published as a book?

It also depends on some other things, are your a genealogist or a
family historian, do you want "pretty" output or are you more
interested in producing a reference work for future generations?

R. Scott...
I'm just someone who is interested in my family history. I have relatives
without computers interested in what I find and so print outs easily
followed and read. Also I had a web page but moved servers so will need to
redo it so a web presence it nice.

Not writing a book or turning pro, its hard enough to find mine (I think my
Lineage is the Severe Black Sheep side or my grandfather or ggrandad
switched names)

Once those questions are answered then you can search for the software
best suited to meet your goals.

My particular goals required that I use TMG as no other package on the
market could as easily produce what I wanted.

Theo Carr-Brion...
GRAMPS does run well under Windows.
