Bonjour,
In looking at French-Canadian marriage records in parish records, I
often see something like 'after one (or two) banns of marriage being
read during mass...' and 'having received dispensation for not having
the required three banns', etc, etc.
Just curious -- why were they so often unable to get the three banns
read? I mean, it seems like a pretty simple thing (to read the banns)
and getting dispensation had to be a pain...

Often, they were NOT unable to get them but chosed to.
It can be a matter of looking richer (you have to pay to skip the
banns), or better (you look like some good catholic), etc.
But, there are many reasons to get faster the marriage and there are
periods where you can't marry (before Easter or Christmas).

Merci,

Mark,
Some people where in a hurry...
You can verify that with the birth date of their first
born child...
