Hello Missy,
I'm the listowner of elbing-l@yahoogroups.com where you also posted this query.
Exactly what are you looking for? Is it mainly the descendants of the
people you say went back to Germany in 1923? Have you had any contact
with the Polish authorities in today's Elblag? In other words, just
where have you looked for what and found what or who?

information we have obtained is very scant,to say the least, and I am
DESPARATE to find other family members or someone with information
relating to them. My grandfather was Ernst Herbert Fuhrmann, born in
Elbing Germany on August 2,1906.

Elbing is now called Elblag and it is part of Poland as you can see
from the answer of Fred Rump.
To find addresses of of Polish archives etc. read the book

Could not find an Elbing, Germany. But, there is an Elbing that was in West
Prussia, and is now in Poland, and called Elblag. You can find it by using
There is a good site telling about the town, found at
Polish phone directory at
does not find any Fuhrmann listings currently in Elblag, Warminsko-mazurskie
area, Poland.
However, there are 4 Fuhrmann listings in Gdansk, Pomorskie area, about 80
km or 48 miles northwest of Elblag. Fuhrmann is a very prevalent German
surname, so this may not be of help.
Are you looking for distant relatives in Poland?
Good luck on your search.

I assume you've seen the Ellis Island record for these folks? If you
don't already have a login ID you can register at ellisisland.org. The
manifest image (two pages of it) is available.
A simple search shows Ernst and his family arriving in 1923. Parents are
listed as Edward and Anna, sons Ernst, Kurt and Alfred, niece Lisbeth,
which seems to correspond with your info and confirm the relationship of
Lisbeth to the family.
They're listed as traveling to see Edward's uncle Jubin [sic] Fuhrmann in
Clayton MO, probably Julius, who emigrated in 1882. Julius was born in
1853 in Salacia (according to the 1920 census), parents from Austria.
Julius has a daughter Rosy (born in Iowa), married to August Kronsberg,
one daughter Vera (your Vera Marlowe?). In the 1930 census Rose is
divorced but also has children August Jr., Eugene and Francis.

Salacia is probably Schlesien or Silesia.

Elbing has church and civil records available on microfilm orderable at
your local FHL. Since you have Edward's birth year you might want to see
if you can find a birth record for him, which would have Edward's
parent's names. You may get lucky and find a marriage record for them
too, in which case you could find their birthplaces listed as well.

You won't find info marriage records without writing to the state
archive for this time period. Edward's birth may also be problematic
because Civil records started before his birth and they too would only
be in Polish archives.

Also living in the home was a female who went by the name Lisbeth
Fuhrmann.Lisbeth was born in 1903.Now it's not certain if Lisbeth was
actually a daughter to Edward or possibly a neice, only that she lived
in the home with them. All were from Elbing.I wish I had more precise
dates of birth and information to go on,but so far this is really
essentially it,other then, that the family in 1923 took a boat trip to
the U.S.The name of the ship was called Suffren, and it left Le Havre
France,and landed at Ellis Island,New York,November 1923.
At some point, and no idea when..all but my grandfather Ernst returned
to Germany, and Ernst wound up settling in Missouri.Exactly what
happened priar to,or after the trip in Nov.1923,is not known, for
anyone. We simply do not know anything of who these people apart from
the trip in 1923,and when my grandfather was alive, the subject of
family, and Germany were strictly OFF LIMITS and never spoken of...
Possibly there was an uncle by the name of Julius Fuhrmann.Cousins to
grandpa Ernst were Rose ( Fuhrmann) Kronsberg, and someone by the name
of Vera Marlowe (sp?) and Ursla Von Gross ??
Well, this is all the information i've got.I very much hope that someone
is this bunch looks familiar to someone, and that at last I may have
possibly found some help in finding my family.
I look forward to hearing from you,and MANY,MANY THANKS !
