Hello All-

I just joined after finally finding my great-great-grandmother's family
name. Well, at least an Americanized version.

In the 1860 US Census in Michigan, it is spelled, VICE. In the 1870 US
Census in Michigan, it is spelled WISE. The parents were both born in Italy
and most of the children were also born in Italy.

Can anyone help me with a more appropriate Italian spelling of this name, or
at least close spellings to look for. I would like to search beyond 1870 and
prior to 1860 but so far, I'm having no luck at all.

These are the given names they used; Vincent, Maria, Madeline, John,
Angeline, Chelestine and Louisa.

In a later census, John was staying with his sister Mary and it's very hard
to read his last name but it looks like, NACHE. Another odd thing, on
mygreat- grandfather's records, he says his mother's maiden is MACK. I know
that doesn't sound anything like VICE or WISE but with accents, who knows.

If anyone would care to give this some thought and e-mail me with any hints
at all, I would certainly appreciate the effort.

Thank-you,
John in Racine WI

In Italy there aren't VICE or VECI, but there are presence of family
with surname VECE
you can see in:

Good luck Maria Luisa

listings of Vice. Nothing before 1860, since the site just covers 1892 -
1924.

12 listings for Vice, most of them coming from Italy. There is even a
Vincenza and a Vincenzo, but all of these came to the USA after 1860. Most
residences are shown as unknown, but there are some from Contursi, Venezia,
and Acerno.

You might take a look at these two sites, and use the Ellis Island site to
find similar names to Vice.

The name may have died out in Italy, however, there are three listings of De
them are in Sezze, and one in Aprilia.

There is one De Vice on the Ellis Island site. He shows as Belgian, not
Italian.

There is one De Vice on the Castle Garden site, from Montecorvino.

some references, one of which happens to be a Vice from Yugoslavia.

You must realize, that using a search term such as Vice, even in a genealogy
search site, is going to pick up some "Vice President" hits, so it may take
a little searching to find what you are after.

Not a lot of help, but maybe some directions to go. The census information
you have should show when your Vice came to the USA, which should narrow
down your search a little. You did not mention that in your post.

You might check out the other names you mention on the immigration sites,
just to see what you come up with.
