Hello All,

In yesterday's post concerning the immediate ancestry of John
de Wentworth of Elmsall (fl. ca. 1300 - 1314), a prior post by
Cris Nash was noted in which a pedigree drawn from Burke's was
cited [1]. In particular, this pedigree gives the grandparents
of John de Wentworth and his elder brother William as "William de
Wentworth and Dyonisia da. of Peter de Rotherfield."

If this is factually based, it presents the possibility that
the Wentworths descended (via de Rotherfeld) from the Deincourt
family of Blankney, Lincolnshire. The following was noted by
Richard Holme in his research into the records of the Wapentake
of Osgoldcross:

' Thorp Audlin.
Out of the Collections of R. Gascoigne, lib. F. f. 34.

G [vol. 127] 16 To all & c. Sr Peter de Rotherfeld &
Albreda his wife daughter of Oliuer de
Daincort gaue to William de Wintworth, son of William
de Wodhus, Kt, one Toft & c. in exchange for a certaine
Toft in Thorp audelin which they had of the guift of
the foresaid William in the same towne.
Witnesse, Adam de Wanervill, John Biset. ' [2]

If it was correctly taken that the Oliver de Eincourt (or
Deincourt) mentioned in the above record was the same Oliver of
Blankney (fl. ca. 1196 - 1246) who was the father of Sir John
Deincourt (d. bef 14 Oct 1257), it is at least chronologically
feasible that such a descent exists. A daughter of this Oliver
Deincourt could easily have been a grandmother of the brothers
William and John de Wentworth.

Should anyone have any additional insight, or documentation,
concerning these early Wentworths and their antecedents, that
would be most welcome.

Cheers,

John *
