I have just been going through, and it's a good read, Robert Joseph's
Cotton's article on "The Yale Descent from Braiose and Clare through
Pigott of Buckinghamshire", published in The American Genealogist in
January 1908.
Katherine Langstone, d. bef 6 Jan 1558, (p. 7) is the wife of Thomas
Pigot, who is in the line and she is also the mother of the next in the
line, Elizabeth Pigot. On p. 8 he refers to two distinct candidates as
Katherine's father who could either be Thomas Langstone, as in
Lipscomb's Bucks, or Christopher Longstone, as in the 1634 Visitation of
Bucks.
In 1598 some heralds were asked to draw up a pedigree roll of the
Pigots; this roll has survived and I have managed to obtain a photo of
it (using the same negatives that were used to make the copy in
Aylesbury, Bucks Record Office). The original of the roll might be
about three feet wide and six long but I guess it has been reduced
slightly for the photographs. This roll has on it clearly that
Katherine was:
"Katherin daughter and heire of Thomas Langstone of Abington, Bucks
... gent"
I cannot read the last word but one. I don't know where Abington is in
Bucks and R J Cotton put that in quotes in his article, possibly to
indicate his uncertainty. My guess though is that it was the place now
known as Addington which is in north Bucks. It may just be that Cotton
was quoting Lipscomb and Lipscomb had actually seen the roll for
himself as I believe it has not moved, or not moved far, from
Doddershall, Bucks since delivery there.
For whatever reason, it might be of interest to say that in 1598 the
spelling through this roll was "Pigot" and not "Pigott".
