I have come across the following charter Harl Ch 83 D 44. An interesting
aspect of this charter is that it concerns the transfer of the manor of
Boyton. The IPM of John Warrene in Edw. 21 states he held Boyton for
his life, with remainder to John, son and heir of John de Brewes,
knight, and his heirs, of Thomas son of Maurice de Berkele, by the
accustomed services. Presumably, John son of John de Brewes transferred
this manor to Mary de Breouse, Countess of Norfolk and Marshall of
England. The elder John de Breouse was brother of this Mary and son of
Peter de Breouse d1312 of Tetbury. The following charter was made in
Edw 22 confirming this transfer. The question arises who was the person
who made this charter.
One secondary source has the person as Joan le Breuus dau of...Sanford,
presumably because of the seal. The seal has the de Braose arms in a
shield surrounded by three smaller circular shields having samford arms.
Unfortunately the legend of the seal is difficult to read but according
to the same secondary source it reads "Sigill::Johanne:: Le Breeus”.
Another troubling aspect concerns the use of the words "mon manoir de
Boyton" suggesting that the person confirming the grant was the person
who possessed the manor. Alternatively, can the word "mon" be stretched
to mean "his".
Any comments would be much appreciated.
