In the past I've posted a few items showing that New England immigrants
Edmund1 Hawes and Edward1 Bromfield were kinsmen, both being
descendants of Mrs. Jane (Whitfield) (Porter) Quinby/ Quimby by
different husbands.
Now, it appears, there may be a third immigrant who is a descendant,
Gov. William Shirley of Massachusetts (1694-1771), the son of William
Shirley, merchant of London, and his wife Elizabeth, daughter of John
Godman. The line from Jane Whitfield to William Shirley seems to run
thus ...
Jane Whitfield = (1st marriage to) Richard Porter
Mary Porter = Thomas Godman
Edward Godman = widow Anne Bennett
John Godman = Catherine Townley
Elizabeth Godman = William Shirley
Gov. William Shirley
This seems to be supported by Percy S. Godman, _Some Account of the
Family of Godman_, pp. 34-35, 39-41, 43, 49 (see
I believe the NEHGR quotes from an eighteenth-century Shirley will that
mentions some Bromfield kinsmen (I'm not sure if it specifies they were
in New England; can anybody check on that?). Oddly, _RD600_,
discussing the royal descent of Gov. William Shirley, shows his
paternal grandmother to be "___ Oglander." The maternal grandmother of
Edward1 Bromfield was Mary (Oglander) Kempe. Bromfield and Gov.
Shirley may thus be related two ways, through both the Oglander and

Er, ... should be "through both the Oglander and Whitfield families."

Porter families.
If Gov. Shirley does, in fact, share a descent from Jane (Whitfield)
(Porter) Quimby, he would be a fourth immigrant descended from the
Whitfields (along with Hawes, Bromfield, and Rev. Henry Whitfield).
