Jwc1870...
Dear Michael Anne, John R, Will, Douglas and others,

While Richard Comyn who died between 1244 and 1249 is said to have been the
eldest son of William and his 1st wife Sarah filia Robert Fitz hugh something
about it does not ring true.
While One might expect the heir of such a notable figure to witness royal
charters , build castles, religious places and roads, lead troops into battle
or go on diplomatic missions, Richard does not appear to have done any of it
nor does He appear to have married an heiress, though one or perhaps two of his
full brothers did.
On one of CastleDuncan.com`s
sites in the Scottish section, it is indicated that Jordan Comyn had
something to do with the beginning of Deer Abbey which his persumptive father
William built in 1219. He , with William, Earl of Buchan as 1st witness and with the
name of Walter Comyn beside his, also witnessed two charters by King
Alexander II to the Church of Saint Kentigern`s, Glasgow on 23 July (1225-6) See
MichaelAnne`s post on Jordan Comyn on December 1st 2005.
If Jordan did in fact have a hand in establishing Deer Abbey, it tends to
indicate that Jordan was his son ... quite possibly the eldest, but died prior
to his father and probably before or during the Gillesboig MacWilliam
rebellion of 1228-29, when Walter was granted Badenoch and possibly the Menteith
heiress whose father died in 1233/4, when Walter succeeded as Earl. William also
died in that year and Walter assumed all the duties of chiefship, as He died
without male issue surviving, Badenoch and the chiefship probably would have
gone to Richard`s eldest son John as He appears to have been the oldest of
William`s sons to have left a surviving male heir. John Comyn, Earl of Angus may or
may not have been a son of William`s, but if so, probably older than Richard
whose marriage is unknown.
Sincerely,
James W Cummings
