Ordering copies from PRO

Paul Mackenzie...
Recently I have been ordering original documents from the 13th and 14th
century from the PRO.

Ordering paper copies of such documents are relatively inexpensive,
except for the postage.

I have found that you can order a batch of separate documents at the
same time and as such minimise the postage cost. I recommend doing it
this way.

I can't answer your questions regarding digital copies, as I've only
ever order photocopies or photographs from records offices in the past,
but I am grateful to you for pointing out that it is possible to order
PRO document copies through the post, something I had not thought of
previously.

Many county record offices in the UK offer a similar service.

I understand it is possible to obtain a digital image of such medieval
documents directly from PRO but the costs seem prohibitive. I wish to
obtain a medieval document, which was referenced in a secondary source
and was said by another secondary source to be faded and unreadable and
would need a paleographic examination for a reliable transcription.

I was relunctant to order paper copies of this document if I could not
read it. However, would a digital image be any better?

Does anyone have experience of such a situation?
