My gggrandfather was born in Madrid Spain in about 1828 according to his
marriage cert and his children's birth certs - some say Mexico! His name was
Edward Searle and he turned up here in Australia in about 1853. Does anyone
have any ideas on how I might locate his birth details. I believe his
father's name was also Edward Searle. Any suggestions gratefully
appreciated!

Have you tried soc.genealogy.hispanic? They might be able to help. Also, as
Hugh points out, they sound british, so a post to soc.genealogy.britan may
be profitable. For a start, what was his mother''s name? If it also sounds
british, there's a good chance that the couple married before they went to
Spain - that may be a way of pinpointing them.

This may not help very much, but your e-mail reminds me of a GG
Grandfather who went to Lenares, Brazil (verified) to work in the gold
mines. He and his family lived there for some years where children were
born and 2 died.
Family folklore always had it that he and the family had gone to
Lenares, Spain to work in the mines. I am beginning to think that he and
the family might have worked and lived in both places which were
renowned for mining.
I did some lengthy research to trace the family to Brazil to the Morro
Velho Mine, but no luck as yet on the supposed Spanish connection.
Try soc.genealogy.Spain and or Mexico.
