Why should the worker accept the freezing of his wages without a similar
freeze placed upon the profits of his employer? Are you espousing the old
Roman Catholic adage of priests everywhere "do as I say....but don't do as I
do"? Are the goose and the gander somehow different?

I just heard Sen. Martinez of Florida tell Chris Mathews that a guy in
the hotel industry in Florida told him he has 5000 jobs in the
industry that pay between $9 and $14 an hour and he can't get
Americans to take them.
I don't believe that it's true for a minute.
Especially looking at this quote from the Miami Herald of Nov. 7, 2005
Keep in mind that the Miami-Dade area is one of the highest wage areas
in the state.
"Cleaning and maintenance jobs pay an average of $8.80 in Miami and
$9.54 in Broward, compared with $10.33 nationally, the Bureau of Labor
Statistics reports."
He'd like us to believe that we need immigrants to work these $9-$14
per hour jobs. I'll bet that would be news to many Floridians.
They'll do anything to keep wages low for the American worker.

I think you should not summarily disbelieve that jobs go begging for
lack of applicants. It is not just the wages, but the type of work.
Admittedly this is uneven in various industries and around the
nation. But certain jobs are just unattractive. I was talking to
a son today and remembered how he and a brother had mowed
lawns summers and shoveled snow winters -- how many kids
today seek out that kind of work? They were reasonably well paid
also for their work if you took it on an hourly basis.

It's Florida though Rita. There's a lot of people with skills that
work for less than $14.00 an hour in florida. In fact a great many
work for less than $9.
If that isn't enough to attract workers to the hotel industry then
They should raise wages.
