What's good for them and not what is good for the nation. Self interest and
greed again, business as usual.

Congress Opposes Ethanol Tax Change

bruce.swinden...
Well, the oil companies have been fighting them for years and the
farmers need help.

Transportation of Ethanol seems to be a serious issue. Existing
pipelines are not usable, they say, because Ethanol has an affinity
for water and there are too many pollutants in the existing systems.

From what I have read, there are plans to produce locally because
distance is such a major factor in cost.

For now, there has been more than enough corn. In Canada, they will be
using wheat with sawdust and wood chips being an alternative sources
under study. The break even for building a plant is said to be about 5
years with at least one company (Husky) buying an old liquor
distillery in BC. Guess they won't care so much what it tastes like!

In this limited case, maybe a tariff is a good thing. Let's not lose
sight of the forest. We're not interested in ethanol for ethanol's
sake. We are interested in it as a source of energy independence -- or
at least as one step towards reducing the political and economic
exposure which results from dependence on foreign sources of oil. So
now you want us to import ethanol and get ourselves dependent on
Brazil and God knows where else? Think about it. (-8
