I posted this last year, but in case someone missed it, I'll try it
again. I read a funny story about Ty Cobb, the Georgia Peach, and
probably the best baseball player who ever lived.
Cobb was born in 1896 and had a lifetime batting average of .367.
In 1966 he was being interviewed by a young TV sports reporter. The
conversation went like this:
Reporter:--- "Ty, if you were playing ball today, what do you think
your batting average would be?"
Cobb:---- "Oh, I'd say around 300 or maybe 310. "
Reporter: --- "Why would it be so low, Ty ? Would it be because of
all the night games ? Because of all the travel ? Or because the
pitchers are so much stronger now than in your day ?"
Cobb: --- "No. It would be because I'm seventy years old".

Ty Cobb was a man after my own heart. Always did what he thought best.
Seems like I read somewhere that he had a bit of a temper. Didn't he
stab a Black guy, and the team had to bail him out? I think I also
remember something about him leaping into the stands and beating up a
heckler -- only the heckler was in a wheel chair, or maybe he was
blind, had one arm, or ... possibly all three. (-8
