Anybody know? Canadian Lumber

Jean Smith...
Way back when, we entered into economic war with Canada over softwood lumber.
Have we made peace yet? I was listening to a developers pitch on Marketplace for
leasing schools from developers and the argument for acting quickly to avoid
continuous price increases reminded me.

Ottawa made a deal but Canadian Lobby feels it has been sold out by
Ottawa. It gives Canadian suppliers 80% of the duties already
collected by the US Government. The problem with this is that it gives
20% to the US competitors so that they can pay off their lawyers and
encourage future legal intervention. Another big problem is that US
competitors have the right to cancel the deal in 2 years if they wish.

Deal is unlikely to pass in Canada without changes.

'Ten days ago, Canada won a key case at the U.S. Court of
International Trade. Washington has not said if it will appeal the
ruling'

This strengthened the Canadian lobby feelings of righteous
indignation, perhaps that their virtue was being sold for too low a
price.

The Ottawa 'champion' is also 'tainted'. He switched parties so that
he could continue what he started as a Liberal in the previous
government. People don't know what to think of his character as a
result. He seems to have a tendency to do whatever is needed to be
done to make a deal; right or wrong! Is he believable?

See:

for current information.

Harry Thompson...
Thanks Bruce for the update.

I'm turning increasingly against protective tariffs and internal subsidies.

Welcome to the dark side. (-8

Yours for REAL free trade.

Jean Smith...
Oi! I had no idea.

I think that I'd stick with the court and go for punitive damages.

El Castor...
Glad to see that you are a supporter of free trade. So am I.
