I admit that I object to the food police. They have no right to tell
others what to eat and they do more harm than good. I also object to
the amount of news devoted to eating disorders. If you are anorexic or
obese, at least have the decency to keep it to yourself.

Rita...
I find it interesting that both anorexia and obesity have been
presented as psychological issues. I do believe there may be a
genetic component for obesity in some cases. Anorexia, which
affects mostly young women, is said to be either a desire for
control or a reaction to unrealistic expectations of society
vis a vis the desirability of "thinness". Obesity sometimes is
presented as a need to gain through food fulfillment that is
lacking in other aspects of one's life. I have known many
people who have struggled to control their eating throughout
their lives. They join this weight program or that and usually
make short term gains, but relapse into eating too much. And
it is not just what they eat -- many eat amazingly "healthy"

So, in the end, you end up praising the Illegal Alien in the Field
picking the food you eat??????????????

Rita...
LOL. That does seem to fit the profile of the illegal aliens --
face marred by the dust and sweat and blood etc. And not just those
who work in the fields, but those who do countless other back breaking
and "dirty" jobs as well.

I love it when one piece of rhetoric directly contradicts another.
Life is just full of these minor contradictions, isn't it.

Jim Higgins...
My intent, when I posted this, was to satisfy my curiosity about the ads I
have seen on TV from consumerfreedom.com and I liked what I saw. I have no
objection, in fact welcome, information on fat levels in food and info on
what may (or may not) be a problem with food and its consumption.

I mightily object to some "public interest" (which I take to mean *their*
interest) group, and compliant legislators, deciding what I may and may not
eat. Please do inform me but I really do not like up-engined "Soup Nazis".

foods, just too much of them. I have come to believe many are
dealing with a genetic predisposition.

While obesity seems to predominate in the "lower" social
classes, although with many exceptions, anorexia seems to be
found mostly among middle class young women who have issues
of attempts at overcontrol by their parents. Often this
behavior is coupled with attempts at self mutilation, such
as cutting oneself. Anorexia, like obesity, is difficult to
treat through therapy or medically or both.

I do think it is interesting that Americans and also those
in the UK have high rates of obesity, much higher than those
in other European nations. How and what we eat does seem to
be learned behavior to a large extent.

There are so many facets to this issue it is hard to grasp all
of them at the same time. I believe it is a wide open inquiry.

On July 4, 1776, America's founding fathers signed their names to the
Declaration of Independence in an effort to affirm basic liberties. But they
never dreamed that anyone would someday attempt to strip the American people
of the fundamental freedom to control what we eat and drink. In the spirit
of throwing off the shackles of harassing powers, we offer our Declaration
of Food Independence.
