jimstevens...
Just watched again a Frontline program produced in 2004. Is Walmart
Good For America.

I never liked Walmart as a consumer and like them a lot less for their
impact increasing our foreign deficit with China. They essentially
coerce manufacturers to move their production offshore and eventually
we will not produce anything.

Don't shop in Walmart.

El Castor...
Jim, Walmart operates on one principle -- to offer merchandise to
their customers at the lowest possible price. They comply with the

Gary James...
And if they have to force their supplier to cut quality to give them
the best price, then so be it. It's called the "Walmart Effect" when
they keep making demands that a supplier cannot meet without lowering
costs.

El Castor...
Every consumer makes a judgment call when it comes to price and
quality, and so does Walmart. If they swing too far in either
direction, sales will suffer, and they will be forced to change. That
is what free enterprise is all about -- choices, not some commissar
setting production quotas and prices. You know how well that works --
don't you? Or do you?

law, just like Target, K-Mart, COSTCO, Walgreens, Home Depot, and
every other major US retailer. I don't have a problem with that. Do
you? Do you drive a Toyota? Take a look at the tag on the shirt you're
wearing. Where was it made? Where was the computer you are staring at
right now, manufactured? You, and people like you, are free to pass
laws against imports, if you wish, but in a fit of ignorant jingoistic
hubris, all you would accomplish would be to destroy our economy.

Thumper...
That's the problem with unfettered capitalism. They abide by the law
and destroy the country. Corporations are like pacman. They eat
everything in their way in order to turn a profit. They have no
conscience and no remorse. When they have destroyed this country they
will move on.

Gary James...
And the worst thing is they have eternal life. They are the only
American citizen that does. That in itself is an invitation to do
evil. They can't be punished. We should limit their life span to
25 years and have it renewed periodically only if they are good
American citizens.

Her are a few restrictions that earlier and smarter Americans put on
Corporations:

* Corporate charters (licenses to exist) were granted for a limited
time and could be revoked promptly for violating laws.

* Corporations could engage only in activities necessary to fulfill
their chartered purpose.

* Corporations could not own stock in other corporations nor own any
property that was not essential to fulfilling their chartered purpose.

* Corporations were often terminated if they exceeded their authority
or caused public harm.

* Owners and managers were responsible for criminal acts committed on
the job.

* Corporations could not make any political or charitable
contributions nor spend money to influence law-making.

Here's an idea for you, Jim. Why not start by campaigning to have the
constitution changed? The people of whatever state you live in are
being thrown out of work by cheap products produced in other states.
That has to be stopped! Tweak the constitution and pass a law
requiring that everything sold in your state be manufactured there!
That will put people back to work in good paying jobs! Right?

Alan Lichtenstein...
I totally agree with you here. In consideration of this and other views
which you have recently posted, I am wondering if you considered
switching your political allegiances, as your views do appear to have
far more in common with the goals of the party which you do not support,
while the goals of the party which you do support appear to be in
significant conflict with your views.

Amo Walmart !

jimstevens...
Change parties? It was Clinton that opened the floodgates to Chinese
production.

Thumper...
Not alone he didn't. It was started under Nixon, accelerated under
Reagan and by the time Clinton came along it was the most bi-partisan
work ever done by our government.

SMART people *DO* shop Walmart!

The people have already voted Walmart the biggest success.

Liberals, Unions don't like success.

Go Walmart.
