Gary James...
I recently downloaded the new version of Netscape 8.1 browser. I
really don't care for it but I wonder what others may think.

Jose...
No newsreader.

Alan Lichtenstein...
I use Netscape 7.2 and will not use 8.1 when they have a Mac version,
because they have eliminated the mail and news capabilities from
Netscape. A short while ago, Netscape severed their relationship with
Mozilla, and when they developed version 8.1, eliminated the mail and
news capabilities. I see you're using Forte Agent for your newsreader,
and if you don't mind using a different newsreader, you can use Netscape.

I find Netscape easy to use, and the new version is quite compatible
with the capabilities of my Mac G5 OS 10.4.6, which I find better than
anything Bill Gates has produced. What it does in the PC world, I
couldn't say, not using them.

The browser has so much capability, you really need the manual as well,
as the help menu is not sufficient. You need to pay for that, and it's
well worth it, for then you get the full capability of the browser,
which you are likely to lose by not having it. When you see the
shortcuts, and everything you can do, you will like it. But I recommend
that you get a previous version, which has the mail and news
capabilities rather than the new one, which does have some additional
safety features, but nothing you can't provide for with alternatives,
which you may have anyway.

I never had great luck with Netscape. I did buy it several times over
the years but always ended up with serious problems. Conflicts,
crashes, and such. I would never use it again. I am having a few
problems with Firefox as well and have to somehow figure the out.

Rita...
You bought Netscape's browser? Downloads are free and always have
been, so far as I know.

jimstevens...
Yup. I wanted the installation CD's. And as I recall registration
had some other benifits. Don't recall details but do recall having
the installation disk on a shelf by my desk for some time. I kept it
thinking maybe I would figure out what problems were. Finally, threw
it out and won't go back. I bought two different renditions.

One problem is with USAA financial site it just won't show the menu
properly. The only way the menu on the left will show properly is if
I reduce the size of the font to a silly level where I can hardly see
it. The text overlaps if it is at regular size I view all other sites
at.

Rita...
There are some sites that simply will not display well with Firefox.
Some web site designers design their sites to display well with
any browser, others only for IE. But more and more sites that
once were Firefox incompatible now are.

I used to have to use IE for my banking site, but now it works
fine with Firefox.

When I was creating web pages I found some simply did not
display well with any browser except IE. There are ways for the
web designer to make a page compatible with all browsers but
some still don't do it.

Another problem is just unexplained crashes. Generally happen when
something else like a callout is run. A popout window with
information from a help screen for example. Pain in the ass.
